The Day the Sky Fell--Finished!

My fourth novel is done!

The rough draft clocks in at 90,000 words, and I'm not sure that number will fluctuate too greatly after revisions, but we will see. I already have it out to alpha readers, because I want to get it editor/agent-ready as soon as possible.

Also, I started this book at the end of May, which means I finished it in three months. That's a record for me. Usually it takes four to five. (I know CSH took five, don't remember how long I spent on Weirs.) Helps that I seriously quintupled+ my word count post-WorldCon. :D I'm really excited to get this book polished and ready to go.

Now some random crap that you all care so much about.

Total chapters: 20
Total words: 90k
Number of names I unknowingly changed the spelling of: 2
Number of people I later realized had curse words for their name: 1*
Alternate title idea: The Breaking Sky (What do you think?)

Anyway. Now I need to finish rewriting Piscis, outline books 2 and 3 of this series, and then outline my next standalone (which will be the next book I actually work on). I have a few ideas for that one. Hoping I get to use the word "teeth" in the title.

-------------
*Explanation: the protagonist, Kylah, is bilingual, and curses in his native tongue. I accidentally used one of these curses as a name for a minor character in the last few chapters. Go me.

  1. Congratulations! That is amazing. I can't even imagine what it feels like to start and finish a book in three months. Wow. So cool.

Also, The Breaking Sky sounds like a good title to me! I'd let it sit, though, see how it feels a week from now.

  3. I thought I posted a response to this, but I guess not, so here it is again:

Congratulations on finishing yet another novel! Good jorb. As far as the title goes, I think "The Breaking Sky" or some variation on that could be a good switch. "The Day the Sky Fell" very much evokes Chicken Little, but from what you've told me of the story it's more inspired by the folktale than based on it, so distancing the title from the story could be a good move (especially since the story doesn't have the same sort of emotional pull as, say, Cinderella).

But I agree with lachristensen. Toy with the idea, sleep on it, and then make up your mind.

  4. CONGRATS.

I'm excited to see how it all ties together.

I'm enjoying this book quite a bit, so it better have a good ending or you'll never hear the end of it. ;)

Again, good work. Now you've written two books in the time it took me to write one. Gosh dang it. :P

  10. Bit late, but congratulations on finishing! =D Especially in only three months! I'm jealous of your discipline and mad word-cranking-out skills! ;) And like everyone else, I like the name (The) Breaking Sky. Maybe if you wanted something longer, Breaking with the Sky?
