Someday Stars: Meet Leigh Covington

Hi Charlie!!! Thanks for having me over!

What’s your name, and where are you from?
My super-secret identity is Leigh Covington! Bahahaha! I am from a teeny-tiny town in northern Utah. We haven't had much here except farms and horse fields until about 10 years ago. Now we have a doctor’s office, pharmacy, and a few other things. It's crazy. I like living in a small town, but I also love to visit the "city."

How long have you been writing?
Oh gosh! I've really been writing since elementary school, just never realizing I might use it to be published one day. I loved English and I loved writing stories. As I got older people were always asking me to write poems for gifts, or plays or skits. It was always fun and one day I decided to start fooling around with picture books which eventually turned to YA Fantasy. And hopefully one day I'll have published copies that others can enjoy!

What genre(s) do you write?
Right now I'm writing a YA Fantasy, but I'd like to fool around with YA contemporary as well. Even MG would be fun. Apparently I love everything!

What’s your current WIP? Can you tell us about it?
Sure! My current WIP is a YA Fantasy called STAIN. Here's a little blurb...
When Skye escapes slavery on The Island, all she wants is to find her mom. Instead, she's finds herself thrown into a  war with an underground group that is trying to defeat the king. She soon learns that having freedom doesn't mean life is easy, especially when she might be the key to the kings downfall.

What’s your current day job? How does it help or hinder your writing?
Right now I am a stay-at-home mom, but I might be in the market for a job. We're trying to decide. Kids can be the ultimate inspiration, especially if you're writing in that age group. At the same time, I have a lot of responsibility managing three crazy children so my writing time isn't always interruption-free. In fact, I usually have to write when they go to sleep. Then I write until my eyes blur. That's when it's time for bed. Leaves me a little tired at times, but it's worth it!

Who is your favorite author?
Impossible to pick just one... I loved reading Mary Higgins Clark in high school. I also love John Grisham and Dan Brown. From there it has escalated to J.K. Rowling, Suzanne Collins, and Elana Johnson!

Favorite book?
Hard questions!!! Definitely the Harry Potter series and the Hunger Games Trilogy!

What other hobbies or activities do you do outside of writing?
I think part of my problem is that I like SO MANY THINGS! I love to read (of course), I love to visit our farm and ride the horses, love hiking, sometimes baking, I do crafts and photography, love 4-wheeling and boating and camping. Hmmm, I know there's more, but that's a good start!

What is something unique about yourself?
In school I always got the "most talkative" awards as well as "biggest flirt." Yeah, that tells you a little something about me. I tend to be completely inappropriate at all the wrong times. And I despise wearing dresses. I'm most comfortable in jeans and t-shirt. Dresses drive me crazy. I also tend to change my haircut and hair color quite often.

Do you have a blog, Twitter, and/or Web site we can link to?

  2. Oh, I totally agree about the dress thing. Put me in jeans and a comfortable shirt and I can do anything. Put me in a dress and I can't even figure out how to get in the car.

Awesome interview. Your book sounds really cool. I'm looking forward to the day you get it published! :-D

  3. I loved everything about this interview, ladies. :)

Leigh, my daughter loves Mary Higgins Clark, John Grisham, and Susanne Collins. I just ordered her Elana Johnson's books, so your interview answer confirms that she will love her too. :)

  6. Most talkative? Use that to your advantage to drive your kids nuts so they leave you alone.
Yeah, probably a good thing I'm not a parent...

  8. I know your name is not Leigh. I've seen you in person too. But as writers, it is our craft to deceive, is it not?

  11. Great interview - questions and responses! Leigh, I'm so jealous you get to ride horses whenever you want to! I keep trying to get my husband to let us get one, and he refuses with that "look" in his eye. Darn!

  14. I've always hated dresses too, as a kid and now. But I hope my little girl doesn't follow my lead, because I love putting her in dresses. She's part girl, part tomboy, but I can live with that.

  15. I really really really want to read STAIN and I agree that jeans and t-shirt should be the only clothing available on Earth.
