What Are YOU Planning for NaNoWriMo?

NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is just days away, marking what might be the most exciting and productive time of the writing year. I admit I’ve never participated in NaNo, but it’s come to my attention that the challenge can be used as more than just encouragement to write. It solidifies good habits, bonds writers to fellow writers, and offers inspiration.

But writers can use it for even more. I have a friend who is using NaNo not to complete 50,000 words in one month, but as a measure for her own, personal goals.

Perhaps you want to crank out that novel in one month. Perhaps you want your revisions finished before December. Maybe you can vow to send one query a day from November 1st to 30th. I'm still considering what goals I could set for myself.

Are you doing NaNoWriMo this year? What are you using it for?

(And if you have the premise of a new story itching behind your typing fingernails and are willing to share, do spill the beans in the comments! I LOVE hearing new story ideas!)

  1. I'm doing mini-NaNo over at compuserve. Basically we're trying to get 30K instead of 50K. Really I just want to keep up the querying and get whatever words in on the side that I can.

  2. Here's the premise for mine (I wrote it more for mine benefit than to sound eloquent): Sophia, a recent teen, is thrown into a war when she follows a scruffy thief out of her Haven, a walled citadel she's never left. Almost everyone, soldier and farmer alike, are fighting over the four metropolises spread across Maccia. Sophia and the rogue, Biter, assemble a group of naves and pros to fight a brigand party large enough to topple Urbaater to the west before they can seize it. During the final assault, Sophia learns an important lesson--everyone, even the lowliest thief, is worth fighting for.

  3. Well...you already know this, but I guess for the community record? (Hah) I'm writing up my choose-your-own adventure game, based off of Choice of Games' script.

  4. I'm starting a brand new WIP, hoping to get the whole first draft bashed out (or at least a good chunk of it). It's a contemporary YA. :)

  5. I'm rewriting a MS. I've replotted it and I'm basically starting from scratch, changing the POV and major scene alterations.

  6. I'm going to tackle the second book in my YA fantasy series, Glass and Gold. The first book was Fire World and Water World, book two is Air (think steampunk) and Stone World (think underground dystopia). Can't wait!

  7. I find NaNoWriMo impractical, considering my busy schedule, but I do aim to have revisions done on my first draft by the end of the month.

  8. I'm doing it for the first time too. I'm writing about a town (which seems to be the same town I always write about, even though it's nameless and changes location to suit lol) populated with people with stories and murky pasts. It's just general fiction at the moment. Good luck!

  9. I *should* follow that query-a-day tactic. :) Instead, I'm going to attempt a YA fantasy that follows the girl who leads the enemies of the kingdom, and a raid that goes awry.

  10. I'm using NaNo to get a head start on the follow-up book to my debut novel being published next year. But what I love about NaNo is all the things you described in your post like bonding with the writing community and developing good writing habits. Today was the first day of NaNo and I've already written more than I have in the past month. That alone is worth it.
