I feel religion is often avoided in fiction for fear of offending readers, but I agree that knowing a characters views on religion can aid in their character development. Sometimes authors can go too far, causing their story to come across as preachy, if their connection to the religious elements in their story are too personal. But, when religion is used in a way that allows the reader to come to their own conclusion about things, I think that gives a lot of depth to the story.
