The TV Show That Started My Writing Journey

Last night I got together with my old high school friends to watch a TV series that is near and dear to my heart. I first saw it when it came on Fox Kids* in the early 2000s, and when Fox cancelled it, my sister bought the boxed set from Japan so we could see what happened.

But the real reason I love this show is because it's what started me writing.

Yes, I know what you're thinking. "Oh my gosh, it's anime." But don't snub it yet! I'll have you know I got my roommate who absolutely snubbed anime hooked onto this show, because it is that good.

The storyline of The Vision of Escaflowne (てんくうのエスカフローネ) is incredible. It's your standard girl-goes-to-another-world-type plot line, but it leaves you guessing and craving more. The characters are so diverse and interesting, and the music is great to boot. Even now, 11 years later (and anime-ed out), I still love this show. It made me want to write a story like it. It made me want to create my own unique worlds and characters, and pull in the reader the way The Vision of Escaflowne pulled in me.

So, if you're ever looking for inspiration, or have 13 hours to kill, I recommend watching this. :)

This is the opening for the Fox Kids version:

*This really isn't a kid's show, but hey, Fox tried.

  1. I love anime. Japan is ahead of us in the cartoon department (for sure).

  2. I am anime lover i must admit, nrver really got hooked on escaflowne, but It was pretty good. Emma a Victotian Romance on the other hand is amazing!!! I highly recommend it, you will fall in love all over again.

  3. Bahahahaha, the Foxaflowne opening is BAD BAD BAD. Just saying. Count of Fox Kids to hash the crap out of an anime. Silly Foxie.

Had tons of fun last night, though. I forgot how much fun we had watching that show. And it's definitely good inspiration. It certainly sent the lot of us on several writing journeys, didn't it?

  4. I've been meaning and hoping for a chance to finish this show. Do you have it? Could I borrow it?

    1. I've got a set of...ummm...unofficial dvds if you don't mind marginally decreased quality.

    2. If they have the English subs done by non-English speaking Chinese people, you're in for quite a comedy!

  5. Cut my writing teeth doing fanfic back stories and RPGs for the Escaflowne characters. Will always be near and dear to my heart.

By the way, I saw something interesting on the Deseret News website...apparently there's a documentary coming out about fan fiction writers. I'm highly interested in seeing this. I'll have to find out more about it.

  6. Anime sounds so cool! I'm really hoping to get into it soon.

  7. I love fox kids for airing it. If that I hadn't I don't think I would ever have meet Danny or Charlie. Esca tied our little group together.

And I liked the opening of foxaflowne. I think it purdy,

  8. If it involves anime I'm sure I can find thirteen hours to kill! Thanks for sharing :)

  9. Never heard of that show, but anything that inspires you is good.

I was also inspired by a kids show I loved watching, but that was 20 years earlier... Press Gang. I bought the complete box set a couple of years ago and it's still as good as I remember. It's a relief, because so many things aren't as good when you watch them back.

That's the show that got me into anime. :D I'm glad you love it, too! :D

  11. Oh, Escaflowne. That brings me back to my second year of college. :) I heard it got canceled because of the pagan symbols in the cards sequence.

I never did watch it in its entirety, and I am *way* anime'd out now myself, but yay writing inspiration! :D
